How do i earn squad points in mass effect 2?

i heard that you earn them for completeing missions and lvling up, but i have completed a number of missions and am now about lvl 4 and have yet to gain even 1 squad point. I put auto lvl for shepard and squad i dunno if that makes a difference. can anyone fill me in?
